Abstract:
Background: Aging is an unavoidable process associated with various physical,
psychological, and social changes. The elderly population in Bangladesh is rapidly
increasing. Ageing leads to functional limitations, mental health issues, and social
isolation, underscoring the need for targeted interventions.
Aim: The study aimed to identify the need of rehabilitation services among elderly
people living in old age homes in Bangladesh
Methodology: This study was conducted by the quantitative approach with a cross-
sectional design and convenience sampling. Data was collected through a face-to-face
survey among 67 participants aged 60 and above from five old age homes by using a
standard questionnaire (FSQ). Data was processed by using SPSS software v25. The
data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential tests (Mann-Whitney U
test
and Kruskal-Wallis test) to identify significant comparison between
sociodemographic factors and functional status.
Result: Among the 67 elderly people, 98.5% of participants were in the "warning zone"
for physical functioning, and 100% were in the "warning zone" for social activities.
Psychological health was more balanced, with 56.7% reporting good mental health.
Only 22.4% had accessed rehabilitation services previously, but 94% were willing to
use them if available. A significant association was observed between rehabilitation
awareness and better outcomes in intermediate ADLs, work performance, and social
activities. Additionally, the use of assistive devices was linked to better physical
performance.
Conclusion: The findings indicate a critical need for rehabilitation services for elderly
individuals in old age homes in Bangladesh. The majority of elderly residents
experience significant physical, psychological, and social challenges that hinder their
functional independence. The present study emphasizes the necessity of developing
targeted rehabilitation programs aimed at enhancing quality of life and functional
independence in these elderly residents. Increased awareness and access to
rehabilitation services are essential for addressing these needs.
