Purpose: To determine the stress and adaptation in mothers of children with cerebral
palsy. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to determine the socio-demographics
of mothers of cerebral palsy child. To find out stress and adaptation scores in mothers of
cerebral palsy child and examine association among socio demographic variables, stress
and adaptation scores. Methodology: The cross sectional study was chosen to carry out
this study among 103 participants who were selected according to inclusion criteria. The
“Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20items)” and “Psychological Adaptation
Scale(PAS))” these two standard structured questionnaires were used to assess the stress
and adaptation among 103 participants Results: This study found that stress and
adaptation in mothers of cerebral palsy children. Among the 103 participants it was found
that participant had mental stress 19% (n=32) of the participants had total score-20, 16%
(n=31) of the participants had total score-16,14.60% (n=33) of the participants had total
score-15, 14%(n=30)of the participants had total score-14, 11.70%(n=34) of the
participants had total score-12, 5%(n=28) of the participants had total score-5, 8% (n=29)
of the participants had total score-8,4.90%(n=35) of the participants had total score-5,
2.90% (n=36) of the participants had total score-3, 1% (n=51) of the participants had total
score-1.Moreover,most of them mothers were 19% had severe mental stress.This study
indicate 1.95% had poor adaptation, 23.41% had moderate difficulty of adaptation,
53.16% had neutral adaptation, 12.73% had good adaptation, 8.73% had excellent
adaptation and there was significant association between occupation and mental
stress(P=0.001), family income and mothers psychological adaptation had significant
association(P=0.035). Conclusion: As mothers often involves in take care and play main
role in treatment and rehabilitation care of child with cerebral palsy. If mothers always
feel stress and adaptation problem for a long period of time. So early detection and proper
management of this condition is essential during rehabilitation to prevent more
complications and to improve their life quality.
