Abstract:
Background: Spinal cord injuries (SCI) profoundly affect physical mobility, often
requiring wheelchair use for daily activities. While sports and recreational activities are
beneficial for individuals with SCI, women with SCI face unique barriers due to the
intersection of gender and disability. In Bangladesh, where 31.2% of SCI patients are
female, understanding the experiences and perceptions of female wheelchair users in sports
is crucial for promoting inclusivity and well-being. Objective: This study aims to explore
the experiences and perceptions of female SCI wheelchair users regarding their
participation in sports, identifying the physical, mental, and social benefits, as well as the
barriers they face. Methodology: A qualitative research design was used, involving semi
structured interviews with 10 female SCI wheelchair users at the Centre for the
Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP). The interviews focused on their motivations for
participating in sports, the challenges they face, and the benefits they experience. Data were
analyzed thematically to identify common themes and insights. Results: Sports, facilitated
by social recognition, family support, and healthcare encouragement, significantly improve
physical health, mental well-being, social connections, and functional independence,
despite challenges like physical accessibility. Discussion: Sports play a crucial role in the
lives of female SCI wheelchair users, providing them with opportunities to engage in
physical activities, enhance their well-being, and contribute to their overall empowerment.
